It will help participants appreciate the importance of evidence-based care and understand randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews. Participants will have an opportunity, in small groups, to comment on how trustworthy they think a research paper is and to discuss how useful the information in the paper might be in their local situation (critical appraisal). Accessing The Cochrane Library in plain language: a workshop for consumers (
Objectives: To bring about more effective use by consumers of The Cochrane Library and information contained in Cochrane reviews. The following topics will be covered:
• using information from Cochrane reviews for consumers
• accessing information in The Cochrane Library and through www.cochrane.org.
• disseminating information more effectively
• influence of the media on consumers
• encouraging consumer involvement through access to quality healthcare information.
Description: Accessing information from The Cochrane Library can be a challenge for consumers. This may be because consumers are not aware of, or familiar with how and where they can access the information. In addition, the presentation, language and technical details of Cochrane reviews often present barriers that are difficult to overcome. The present workshop addresses access to the Library and the various ways information from Cochrane reviews are presented. The workshop will include a hands-on session in the computer room.
This workshop is intended for consumers only.
